How to Plant Large Grow Bag Plants

Ordered a large 100ltr grow bag plant? But now what do I do?

Enjoy some helpful tips and tricks to make planting these advanced trees a little easier.

Step 1. Prepare the hole

Dig a hole around the size of the grow bag and then extend it to at least half as wide again. The depth should match the height of the grow bag, with just a touch extra. It’s important not to plant too deeply, as this can cause stress to the plant and poor establishment.

Step 2. Improve the soil

Well-prepared soil is essential. Consider bringing in quality topsoil and mixing through organic compost to create a nutrient-rich base. This helps roots establish quickly and reduces transplant shock.

Step 3. Positioning the plant

Carefully tilt the grow bag onto its corner. Using a sharp blade, slit the bottom of the bag right across, then lower the bag into the prepared hole. Continue to cut slits up the sides and peel the bag away from the root ball. This method avoids damaging the roots while ensuring the plant sits at the correct depth.

Step 4. Backfilling and watering

Once in position, backfill the hole with your prepared soil, gently firming it around the root ball to remove any large air pockets. Water the plant in thoroughly to help settle the soil and encourage the roots to make contact with their new environment.

Step 5. Mulching

Apply a good layer of mulch around the base to conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds. Always leave a small gap around the trunk to allow airflow and prevent rot.

Step 6. Create a watering plan

A newly planted 100L advanced tree needs deep, consistent watering to establish. At planting, give it 40–60L to settle the soil, then water 25–40L two to three times per week for the first 6–8 weeks (daily in hot, dry weather).

After this, reduce to one to two deep soakings per week, 30–50L each time, continuing through summer for the first 12–24 months. Always water deeply rather than little and often, mulch to retain moisture, and adjust frequency for soil type and weather.

Think about how you’ll manage watering long-term: whether by hand, on a timer, with a drip system or a dedicated irrigation setup. This will ensure the tree receives reliable deep soakings.

With the right preparation and planting technique, large grow bag plants will establish faster and thrive in their new position.
