Love classic Camellias but looking for something a little different? These gorgeous Sasanqua varieties have been trained as espaliers from a young age, growing flat against lattice. Ideal for creating screening and focal points in classic and formal garden designs. As your plant continues to grow, additional lattice can be added or you can use guide wires to continue the growth. For small gardens you may choose to keep your plant pruned to their current lattice size. Also suitable for planter pots, ensure there is ample room for growth. Sasanqua are ideal for full sun locations.
How do I look after my Sasanqua Camellia Espalier?
Espaliered plants will continue to grow beyond the current lattice. You can simply snip off the existing lattice to attach larger lattice or attach additional lattice. Espaliered plants grows well along guide wires also. Plants can also be pruned back to smaller sizes to suit compact gardens. For best results, sasanqua are ideal for full sun to semi-shade locations. If your area is quite shady, consider a Japonica Espalier instead.
When should I fertalise my camellias?
The best time to fertilize camellias is in late winter or early spring, just before the growing season begins. Fertilizing at this time provides nutrients to support new growth and flower development. It’s essential to use a balanced fertilizer specifically formulated for acid-loving plants, as camellias prefer acidic soil. Additionally, follow the recommended dosage on the fertilizer package to avoid over-fertilizing, which can harm the plants.
Can Camellia Espaliers be kept in a pot?
Yes they can, just select a pot with some additional room for the plant to grow. Keep an eye on the moisture in the pot as potted plants tend to dry out more quickly than they would if they were in the ground.
