Description

Kalamata Olives are a classic choice when creating a Mediterranean or Provincial inspired garden. Featuring layers of thick foliage, with contrasting dark fruit, Kalamata have always been and continue to be a popular choice. Their tasty fruit is ideal for fruit and oil production. Although they can be planted in a semi-shade location, Olives thrive in a full sun location, making them suitable for coastal and dry locations, with low water requirements once established.  Mature plants reach 6 meters tall, making Kalamata Olives are ideal for low maintenance privacy screens or avenue planting.

Commonly Asked Questions

How fast will Kalamata Olives grow?

Olives are considered to have a medium growth rate, they often grow quicker as young plants and slow down their growth rate as they mature. Keep your plant in good health with water in the warmer months, especially when young, slow realease fertalizer and a layer of mulch to retain the moisture.

When should I prune my Olives?

Giving your olives a prune will encourage thicker growth, a prune in late winter / early spring is ideal. If your area is prone to frost, steer clear of pruning this time of year as freshly cut tips can easily be burnt.

Can you keep Olives inside?

Although olives are an outdoor plant, yes you can, however there are a few things to consider. Olives will grow slower in a pot, inside the home. Try and position your olive near a window to maximize sun. Keep a close eye on the overall health of your olive as they will be more prone to disease and poor health indoor. Rotate your pot every few months to encourage even growth over the plant. Also keep an eye on the moisture levels as potted plants will dry out more quickly than if they were planted in the ground.
